Record number of Women’s teams line up for the Laracy & Co Lamma International Dragon Boat Festival 2011
A record numbers of teams have registered for the Laracy & Co Lamma International Dragon Boat Festival taking place on the 15th May at Tai Wan To Beach, Lamma Island, Hong Kong.
Of special interest, the women’s teams are making a come-back this year. “For the past several years, the number of women’s dragon boat crews fell off, and there have only been six or seven women’s crews at best competing at most Dragon Boat events across Hong Kong,” said Event Director Brad Tarr. “This year, we have ten women’s crews signed up to race so far, and we still have another 6-7 weeks of race registration to go.”
First staged in 2007, this is the fifth annual Festival, also known as the ‘Lamma 500’ for its international race-standard, 500-metre course length.
“The Lamma 500 is one of the most exciting, colourful and friendly sporting events in Hong Kong but gives away nothing in competitive spirit.” said Mr Damien Laracy, at title sponsors Laracy & Co. “We’re delighted to continue supporting the event.”
“The interest in this year’s event has be overwhelming,” continued Brad Tarr. “And with such a strong line up of Men’s, Women’s and Mixed teams, we are in for some great battles come race day.”
The Lamma 500 is one of the most challenging and competitive races on the Hong Kong dragon boat calendar with deep, fast water on a course set against the incredible backdrop of one of the territory’s highest peaks, Mount Stenhouse, and the dramatic industrial landscape of the Hong Kong Electric Power Station.
Securing its reputation as one of the most challenging races of the season, the Lamma 500 also features the only 1,000-metre Dragon Boat race to be held in Hong Kong. A record number of teams are expected to compete in this extreme race as well.
“The Lamma 500 is without doubt, one of the best Dragon Boat races in Hong Kong and we are delighted to be a key sponsor this year.” added Antony Michell, Chairman of The Henley Group and Captain of last years finalists the Tai Tam Tigers. “I am personally looking forward to another great day of competitive racing as well as the usual carnival atmosphere.”
The Make A Wish Foundation of Hong Kong children’s charity is the Official Charity of the Lamma 500 and will be organizing activities during the event to raise funds for their activities.
The Laracy & Co. Lamma International Dragon Boat Festival will take place from 9am to 6pm on May 15th 2011.
Entry for spectators is free and refreshments are available at the beach.
